DIY or Hire a Professional Electrician?

Today many people are realizing the benefits of do it yourself projects in relation to home repair. While it is certainly true there are numerous benefits related to DIY projects, especially monetary, it is important to keep in mind that some projects may still require the assistance of a professional. Electrical repair work is one of these projects. You may be able to handle an electrical repair quite capably but that will primarily depend on your level of experience. Keep in mind that it’s always best to consider hiring a professional electrician if you are unsure of your ability to handle the task safely. Remember that electrical work that is handled improperly can cause disaster and be a safety hazard for your family and home.

There are several factors that should be taken into consideration when making the decision to turn the job over to an experienced professional electrician or handle the job yourself. The first step is to evaluate the amount and type of work that needs to be done. You may be able to handle the task if all that is needed is to change out a light fixture. If you are planning to renovate or add an additional room; however, you may well need the assistance of an experienced electrician.

It is also a good idea to taken a count of the number of outlets that need to be installed when you are considering the scope of an electrical job. Most homes today need more outlets than in the past as a result of the ever increasing number of electronic units that today’s homeowners use. It’s always best to make sure you have enough outlets when you are renovating or building rather than finding out after the fact that you did not include enough in the original count.

If you make the decision to obtain assistance from a professional electrician make sure you do some shopping around first, before simply awarding the job to the first electrician that comes along. Take the time to ask questions, find out about their prior experience, whether they specialize in residential or commercial and get a price quote. Ask for references and be sure to follow up on them. It’s also a good idea to ask the candidates to inspect the area where the work will be performed and be sure the quote they give you is a detailed estimate on the work to be done.

Avoid the temptation to go with the lowest bid. While there can be a strong inclination to do this if you’re working on a budget, that urge can be dangerous. The safety of your home depends on quality electrical work and components. Remember that numerous house fires have been directly attributed to faulty wiring. Even if a fire doesn’t occur because of the poor work done it will most certainly eventually result in the need to replace it and that will eventually cost you more money. It’s far better to simply pay a little more and have it done correctly the first time.

When reviewing bids from electricians make sure there are no cost cutting measures involved. If you suspect the electrician may be cutting corners, move on to the next bid.

In addition, always take the time to make sure the electrician you consider working with is certified and licensed to perform the work you require to be done. He or she should also have sufficient insurance coverage in the event they have an accident while working on your property.

Finally, don’t forget to have them sign a contract that specified terms such as time frame for the work to be completed, payment schedule and specifications for the scope of the work.
